Lochgelly HS win Inter Schools Trophy

The 39th Fife Inter Schools Gala for swimmers with additional support needs was held at Lochgelly HS on Thursday 27th September and produced the most exciting finish in the history of the event. The outcome depended on the final two relays. The host school produced an outstanding second place finish in the girls relay and a win in the boys relay to win the Russell Hogg trophy by one point. The victory prevented Woodmill HS swimmers making it four wins in successive years. This was only the third win for Lochgelly HS in 39 years.

The gala is organised by Disability Sport Fife (DSF) and supported by the staff and pupils of Lochgelly High School. DSF is indebted to Lochgelly HS ambassadors who acted as time keepers and Scottish Swimming officials Tom Foster, Jim Drummond and Colin Wilson who coordinated officiating duties. As always DSF had a strong team of volunteers operating on poolside. The gala ran exceptionally smoothly with 55 individual events and relays being held in under two hours. The headteacher of Lochgelly HS presented medals to race winners and also presented the Russell Hogg Trophy.

9 secondary schools participated, the highest number to date. Newcomers Auchmuty HS and Queen Anne HS joined Woodmill HS, Balwearie HS, Lochgelly HS, Madras College, Bell Baxter HS, Glenothes HS and Dunfermline HS for the 2018 gala. The Fife team for the Scottish Junior Championships to be held at Tollcross International Aquatics Centre will be selected from gala results.

Team points: Lochgelly HS 63; Woodmill HS 62; Balwearie HS 39; Madrras College 36; Queen Anne HS 21; Glenrothes HH 19; Auchmuty HS 12; Bell Baxter HS/Dunfermline HS 8. Callum Robertson from Balwearie HS was voted top boy and Cerys Venters Scott from Dunfermline HS top girl.

Ayrshire College students were officiating on the day and did a great job.  They were very enthusiastic and professional and interacted with the pupils extremely well.  Scottish squad players Reegan Stevenson and Ross Munro were also helping on the day and offered advice to pupils.

Thanks also goes to the Celtic FC Foundation’s ‘Inspiring Sport’ project who funded the event, and to the Emirates Arena for hosting and their help on the day.

Edinburgh Football Coach Shortlisted for SFA Grassroots Awards

Edinburgh Football Coach Shortlisted for SFA Grassroots Awards

Spartans Community Football Academy coach Robbie Anderson has been shortlisted for the Scottish FA Grassroots Awards in association with Sunday Mail and McDonald’s.  Robbie is one of three individuals who have been shortlisted for the National Award, which is decided via a public vote with voting now open.  To vote for Robbie, please follow the link below –

https://www.scottishfa.co.uk/football-development/attractive-game/grassroots-awards/award-categories/peoples-choice/

Robbie has been happy to provide over 200 hours of voluntary support to a range of grassroots football projects over the previous two years, mainly based around the East of Scotland.  The initiatives include sessions aimed at Special Education Primary Schools across Edinburgh, providing opportunities for pupils with additional support needs, including intellectual impairments and autism.

A former pupil at Pilrig Park School in Edinburgh, Robbie is working hard to progress through the SFA coaching pathway currently holding level 1.3.  As a result of these achievements, Anderson, who is 22 years old, is an active and engaging role model to the young people who he is coaching on a weekly basis.  He has also continued his education, enrolling on a NC Sports and Fitness course at Edinburgh College and is keen on becoming a lead sports coach in the future.

In addition to his regular coaching commitments, Robbie is also an active member of Lothian Special Olympics – recently competing at National Summer Games in Sheffield as part of the bowls team.

Robbie would be a truly deserving winner of the Scottish FA Grassroots Award.  To help make this happen, please click on the link near the top of the page.

Grampian’s Ritchie Crowned British Champion

A clay pigeon shooter from Aberdeenshire has been crowned British Shooting Grand Final Paratrap Champion 2018.

Allan Ritchie, from Whitehills, took on some of the strongest shooters in the country at the event in Fauxdegla, Wales to secure 1st place after finishing the last round with a score of 24. With Storm Bronagh in full force, it presented some extraordinarily challenging conditions, which the shooters took on with great determination & skill!

Going into the last day, there was a 4-way tie for the lead position. Congratulations to William MacLennan & George Glover who took home the Silver & Bronze medals.

Allan is in the midst of a grueling 3,200 mile round trip for a series of world class events, which also includes the World Shooting Parasport World Cup, taking place this week in Chateauroux in France, and the World Shooting Parasport Grand Prix, which will be held in Lonato, Italy.

Good luck to Allan with the remainder of his events (as well as the long drive), and thank you to the sponsors that are helping him reach his potential!

WestMARC Activity Day 2018

Another brilliant day was had by all the participants at the WestMARC activity event this year.

In partnership with Scottish Disability Sport, WestMARC (West of Scotland Mobility and Rehabilitation Centre) held its fifth Activity day, and for the first time opened the activities to adult participants.

The morning session was devoted to younger people with limb loss and amputation, along with their siblings and parents.  Along with the arts and music rooms, the young people had the opportunity to try out Cricket, Table Tennis, Sitting Volleyball and Wheelchair Basketball.  Cricketscotland, Basketball Scotland, Drumchapel Table Tennis Club and the Scottish Volleyball Association, supported the event with coaches who introduced and encouraged the youngsters into some fun skills and games.

A fantastic inspirational talk from Paralympian, Scott Meenagh ( 2018 Winter Paralympics Nordic and Cross Country Skiing) , gave both the young people and adults an insight into the enjoyment and incredible hard work it takes to reach an elite level.  Scott’s message though, was to inspire everyone to take up an activity they enjoy, no matter what the level and to  see where it takes them.

In the afternoon, the adult participants had the chance to try out the sports and the competitive spirit came out in quite a few!  All the sports were a huge hit, and many who hadn’t taken part in sport in a while, enjoyed a brilliant afternoon of teamwork, competition and laughter!  The Mexican wave was in full flow from the spectators!

Andy Fleming, RDO, Scottish Volleyball said “It was great to be involved in the delivery of the Sitting Volleyball to a new audience.  The participants were really enthusiastic about the sport and quickly became competitive with each other! I felt truly inspired by the attitude and determination of everyone on the day.  I really hope to be able to support this group in the future.”

Huge thanks to Andy Fleming (Volleyball), Tina Gordon, Adam Donnachie and Craig Brown, (Wheelchair Basketball), Euan McLaughlin (Table Tennis) and Ann Hargie (Cricket) for their support with the sports, Scott Meenagh for giving up his time to speak to the participants, and to everyone at WestMARC for ensuring this brilliant event is organised every year.

Second Place for Scottish Goalballers

The inaugural Goalball UK ‘Home Nations’ tournament at York St John University was a great success with the four teams battling it out in a fiercely competitive but friendly atmosphere.

The opening game on Saturday afternoon, between England and Wales, was end to end action and set the tone for all the games to follow. David Lloyd had the accolade of scoring the 1st goal of the tournament (for Wales) but England were the eventual winners.

Next up, Northern Ireland made their competitive debut against Scotland. Anyone watching wouldn’t have known though as they played exceptionally well, only narrowly losing by 1 goal.

Scotland were then immediately back on court to face their ‘Auld Enemy’ – England.  It was yet another great game with England triumphing.

The remaining games of the day resulted in both Northern Ireland and Scotland winning against Wales, whilst England beat Northern Ireland to maintain their 100% record.

Play resumed on Sunday morning after a Saturday night social when ‘Alternative Awards’ were presented – the categories included ‘Considering I’m sighted I’m not bad at this crazy VI sport’; ‘I got out of bed the earliest this morning’; and ‘Don’t tell anyone but really I’m English’!

Northern Ireland continued to play fantastically and, although they were unable to record a win, Wales were by no means outplayed in any of their games. Scotland, rather than tiring, got stronger as the tournament progressed, winning all 3 of their games and putting the pressure on England. In the final game, they cheered on their ‘Celtic cousins’ knowing that a win or draw for Northern Ireland against England would result in them being crowned Home Nations champions – but despite taking an early lead, it wasn’t to be, and England won.

The final table therefore had England and Scotland tied on 15 points but 1st place went to England because of their superior goal difference. So Scotland were 2nd whilst Northern Ireland finished 3rd and Wales 4th.

A massive thank you to everyone who was involved – players, coaches, officials, volunteers and Goalball UK staff – and to York St John University for hosting the tournament. We’re already starting to make plans for 2019!

Congratulations to the Scottish Team of:

Alan Lewis
Andrea Logan
Graeme Roache
Lorna Morisset
Mark Borthwick
Paul Cunningham

Scotland 11 – 10 Northern Ireland

Results – Sunday 9th September:
