COACHING

If SDS is to raise and improve standards, ensure the enjoyment of members and develop young people to their full potential then skilled coaches operating at all levels are essential.

sportscotland has a target of having 9,200 qualified coaches and 240 coach educators trained within Scotland’s Governing Bodies of Sport.  Coaches play a vital role in the implementation and success of Sport 21 2003-2007: The National Strategy for Sport.  There are however still not enough coaches to enable Scotland’s Governing Bodies of Sport to comfortably achieve Sport 21 targets.

SDS plans to develop, co-ordinate and deliver a range of coaching services throughout Scotland in conjunction with major partner agencies.

SDS will continue to work in partnership with Scottish Governing Bodies of Sport, Local Authorities, Regional Sports Partnerships, Local Sports Councils, the Higher and Further Education Sector and others to implement a wide spectrum of coaching initiatives.

The role of sportscotland is to advise partners on the development and implementation of the coaching strategy or action plan.  As one of those partners SDS will be developing its own strategy for coaching over the months ahead with an accompanying action plan.

Sport 21 2003-2007 has identified a number of targets that will be served by this national coaching strategy

·                     80% of school children would be physically active

·                     85% of those aged 13-17 will take part in sport in addition to the school curriculum more than once a week

·                     49% of those aged 14 plus in Social Inclusion Partnership areas will take part in sport at least once a week

·                     55% of those aged 17-24 will take part in sport more than twice a week

·                     43% of those aged 45-64 will take part in sport at least once a week

·                     over 250 Scots will have been medallists on the world stage

·                     over 1 million Scots will play sport in membership of clubs

·                     Scotland will sustain 150,000 volunteers who are contributing to the development and delivery of Scottish sport
