Access and Facility Design

In recent years, much attention has been focused on the provision of barrier-free sports and recreation facilities for people with disabilities. As a consequence, usage of such facilities, by this section of the population, has increased dramatically.
This, in turn, has had a marked influence, in a positive way, on how the public at large views disability. As a result, the inclusive use of sports and recreation facilities has become commonplace.

sportscotland has produced a technical digest on access entitled "Building in Ability". This publication gives clear, concise, comprehensive and up-to-date information on the planning, design and management of sports buildings. They are intended to promote value-for-money, allied with quality, in all new and refurbished sports and recreational facilities.

Some of the topics covered in this technical guide are as follows:-basic design principles adapting and improving existing buildings getting from the car park or bus park to the entrance. Entrances horizontal and vertical movement, toilets, changing areas and showers, outdoor recreation checklist of fittings, surfaces and services checklist of key design issues checklist of key management issues, appropriate references ISBN: 1 85060 300 6  available from:
