Friendship Trophy 2010

With a format of triples and pairs, 7 ice rinks - Braehead, Lockerbie, Greenacres, Lanarkshire, Moray, Aberdeen and Kinross - convened at Greenacres  to compete for the Friendship Trophy. Three rinks from the North and four from the South played off in Round Robin sections.  Moray topped the North group and Greenacres, the holders, qualified from the South with a clean sweep of wins.
A fascinating final took place with one sided games on both sheets. This meant that with two points each, the result according to the rules, was going to be decided on shots scored. The Pairs were off ice first and Moray took the last end to finish with a score of 2-7 down to Greenacres. The triples game which was standing at 7-1 to Moray after 5 ends, came down to last stones. With 4 stones in the 4 foot, and Moray just lying shot, the Greenacres last stone attempted tap back, held straight and slipped past allowing the Moray rink to steal the 1 for victory. Moray scored overall 10 shots to 8 to win the Friendship Trophy.
Ann McGarva presented the Friendship Plate to the Moray Ice Rink team of Gregor Ewan, Jim Gault, Carl Tottie, Michael Mackenzie and Norman Anderson. The Greenacres team of Paul Webster, David Telfer, Gordon Rainey , and Robert Walker were ably assisted by new curler Neil Hogg playing in his first competition!
In the spirit of the competition it was great to see so many new faces at the event. A grand old time was had by all. Including reserves a total of 40 curlers took part. Everyone enjoyed a super meal on the Saturday evening and the whole event was voted a great success.
Thanks are recorded to Greenacres for keen ice and super catering. Thanks to Robin Shand and Alison McDermid, the umpires, and to all the helpers who kept the curling running smoothly.
