Ian introduced the session with an explanation of wheelchair racing structures and opportunities. He outlined who is eligible to race and how to encourage involvement. Specific equipment and pushing techniques were then explored in some detail. The course was greatly enhanced by the presence of the Scottish Disability Sport wheelchair squad members who participated in the day.
During the practical sessions coaches worked with squad athletes. This helped them improve their knowledge and understanding of the technical aspects of wheelchair racing. With extra racing chairs on hand, the coaches had the opportunity to experience firsthand the challenges of this athletics discipline. Training, common injuries, competition structure and programme planning were covered in the later stages of the session.
Scottishathletics acknowledges the support received from Lynne Glen (Disability Sport Development Manager) and Sportcentral for organising the course. Thanks also go to Ian Mirfin (SDS Lead Coach for Wheelchair Athletes) for design and delivery of the course. Special thanks to the squad athletes who attended. Thanks also to the coaches for their interest and attendance.
Due to the popularity and feedback it is intended to repeat the course. Date for the diary.....
