INAS-FID European Championships (Update)

August 2008

13 gold, 4 silver, 3 bronze medals and a world record for Team Great Britain at the end day two of the INAS-FID European Championships for swimmers with a learning disability in Poland.

With the best start imaginable, first time international Craig Rodgie (Dalgety Bay and Carnegie SC) teamed up with Craig Moate (Barking), Dan Pepper (Poynton) and Ben Procter (Oldham) to set the standard for Team GB in the first event. The GB quartet won gold comfortably and set a new world record in the 4 x 200m freestyle of 8.44.12.

On day one Rodgie took his place amongst the individual medallists by winning silver in the individual 100 backstroke and another gold in the 4 x 100 mens relay. Craig Moate won individual gold in the 400m freestyle, Ben Procter won gold in the 100m backstroke and it was double gold for Dan Pepper in the 50m breastroke and 400m Individual medley. Stephanie Bird (Lowestoft) the only female swimmer on the team swam a superb 50 freestyle in 31.46, collecting a well deserved silver medal.  It was a great first day for Team GB

On day two the GB relay quartet collected a third gold in the 4 x 50m medley ahead of South Africa.  Scotland’s Craig Rodgie was part of that success and he then went on to collect a bronze for 100meters freestyle in a time of 59.29. This was the first time the Carnegie swimmer has been under the minute. Craig Moate, Stephanie Bird, Ben Procter, Daniel Pepper added six individual gold medals to the team total on day two and Nicholas Boylan and Mathew Bell played their part by adding two silvers and a bronze. A great all round team performance by Team GB.

The INAS-FID European Swimming Championships in Ostrowiec Swietokrzyski, Poland, 16th – 22nd August, are run under INAS-FID and FINA swimming regulations at the Olympic pool and involve swimmers with learning disability from across Europe.
