Mark Telford who comes from Perth and now lives in Edinburgh won the 2006 Scottish 10K wheelchair championship for the first time in a time of 26mins. 19 secs. The event was part of the Simply Scottish Half Marathon celebrations held in Jed burgh and participants travelled from north and south of the border to the now well established Borders event.
Mark burst on to the road racing scene several years ago and very quickly established himself as a strong prospect for representative honours. Prior to his entry into wheelchair racing he had been a very successful cyclist and used to pressures of competitive sport. Early successes followed but sadly he disappeared from the wheelchair racing circuit until recently and his return is a welcome boost to Scottish sport. There is no doubt that this young man has the potential to go far.
Finishing second in Jed burgh was Tanni Grey Thompson a regular supporter of Scottish athletics and wheelchair racing in particular. Husband Ian finished third in 28:31 with Tanni finishing 1:20 behind the winner. The "Thompsons" have been regular visitors to Scotland over many years to assist with the development of athletics. They have appeared in many races but have contributed also to the development of juniors. Two great ambassadors for disability sport.
The race organiser is SDS Board member Jed Renilson from Borders Disability Sport. The 2006 event was started by Karen Gillon MSP who was born in Jedburgh but represents Clydebank in the Scottish Parliament. Yet again the players and committee members from Jed Forest Rugby Club played their part with the organisation and stewarding around the course.
