Wheelchair Basketball – #ScotsOnParaGB

In the lead-up to the Rio 2016 Paralympic Games, Scottish Disability Sport is delighted to provide an overview of the sports that Scots are competing in as part of ParalympicsGB. In the fourth of the series of sports, we highlight the sport of wheelchair basketball and Paralympian Robyn Love.

Wheelchair basketball is a fun and exciting sport which can be played by all people of any age, gender or ability. The inclusive nature of the sport enables players of mixed abilities to play on the same team. In Scotland there are clubs which provide opportunities for players to train and play recreationally right through to more competitive opportunities within the two national league clubs based in West Lothian and East Renfrewshire.

The Rio 2016 Paralympic Games will see one Scottish player as part of ParalympicsGB:

 Robyn Love

  • Robyn’s journey into basketball began at Edinburgh Napier University where she started playing the running game before joined Bell’s Angels of the North.
  • She has won both the Scottish Cup with Lothian Phoenix and the Scottish Universities Cup with Edinburgh Napier University, before being invited into the GB Women’s Programme within a year of first playing the sport.
  • Robyn made her international debut for the GB Women, assisting the team to silver medal at the Osaka Cup in Japan.
  • She was also part of the GB team at the 2015 European Championships, winning bronze and securing GB a qualification place for the 2016 Summer Paralympic Games.
  • Robyn is the first Scottish player in over a decade to represent the GB Women’s wheelchair basketball squad, and has been selected for the 2016 Summer Paralympic Games in Rio de Janeiro.
